www.ipage.co.ke
Many a times you might have wondered what it takes for a business or individual to have a website set up and running.

Today i am going to give you the breakdown of what it takes to have a website. I will take the approach of someone who wants to make their own website though they lack any knowledge of what they need to achieve their goals.
 Lets go:

1.Domain Name

A domain name is the name of your website. It is also called the root URL (Uniform Resource Locator). An example is www.ipage.co.ke or google.com. A domain name has two main parts. The first part which is the actual name is created by the owner of the website e.g ipage. the second part comes with a dot before it and is called the extension. There are quite a number of extension that one can have. The most famous one is .com. The extension differs from country to country and also depending on the nature of the website. a .org is best fitted for an organization .co.ke is best suited for a company in Kenya.

A domain name is a paid services and is renewable every year. It costs between $15-$30 per year. Companies selling domain name are referred to as domain registrars.

2. Web Hosting

Web hosting is also a paid services offered by web hosting companies. A web host is a computer that is on for 24 hours a day and is connected to high speed internet. The computer stores all information including pages, text and images the a visitor see and reads on your website through a web browser.
The amount one pays for hosting depends on the amount of server space that one buys. The space is sold in Giga Bytes (Gb). An average web hosting plan would cost about $25 Annually.

3.Web development Software

There are a large number of web design software available in the market today. Some of the software are free while others need licensing. A web development software will enable you to design and develop all you web pages. These pages are then to be transferred to the hosting computer and therefore they will be available on the internet.
The software one uses does not matter since most of them will give a similar final product.
Today most free web development software are readily available from the hosing computer. Such on-line software are called Content Management Systems (CMS). The most commonly used CMS include wordpress, Joomla and drupal.

4. A computer

This is most obvious that for you to develop a web page you will need a computer. This is however not a necessity nowadays since, if you are using  a content management system, then all you need is an internet enabled device that ha text editing capability. this could be your smart phone, tablet or laptop.

5.Content

You will need to have the content that you want to publish online. A website will have text, images , videos, downloadable documents and sound files.  All information published on a website will for the web content.
